How to shop on free credit?
By Kurt Smith
With credit still being hard to come by in the UK I thought I’d share my thoughts about an interesting way in which you can buy products now and pay for them up to 4 years later with no interest being charged. That works out better (and often easier) than putting the purchase on a new credit card, as the no interest terms are much longer (and it seemed to be easier for me to get accepted than to get another credit card). In the long run it can certainly save you some money and worries. You’ll get this interest free credit in the UK both from online retailers and off-line ones. Popular examples of the off-line ones include big furniture retailers like DFS (the sofa specialist) and Furniture Village. The application process is normally completed in their showrooms and you pay at the end of the credit period they’ve offer you with 0% interest being charged. When you buy online you can get free credit from a lot of the popular catalogue retailers like Littlewoods, Empire Stores, Freemans, Additions and Argos, as well as from specialist electrical (e.g. Bennetts) or furniture (e.g. Bensons for Beds) retailers. The free credit finance period does vary but with Littlewoods for example you can buy anything from their catalogue now and pay 12 months later interest free, as long as your order is over £50. Since their catalogue includes everything from kitchen appliances, furniture, laptops and electrical goods to fashions, games consoles, jewellery and gifts, you can buy about anything on full free credit and not worry about it for a year. I do recommend though to pay the amount in full after the free credit period, since the APR is pretty high if you won’t to start borrowing from them after the free term period. I created a website called InterestFreeCreditShopping.co.uk (see link below) on which you can compare the different interest free credit finance terms offered by these companies. You can also browse them by category. I try and update this site with the latest information regularly. I have used most of these companies myself and find it a good way to spread the cost of my purchases. Feel free to comment on this article and let me know your views on this.
